Alexis Roth

Dr. Alexis Roth was born and raised in Tucson at the base of the Rincon mountains in Vail AZ. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 1998. Dr. Roth then attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at Colorado State University where she graduated from Suma Cum Laude in 2003. She then pursued advanced training at a combined specialty and private practice internship in Tampa Florida where she was hired as an associate and practiced for several years. It was here that she developed her love for large and exotic animal medicine through work at Busch Gardens.  Dr. Roth moved back to Tucson, AZ in 2006 to be with family and practiced advanced general medicine, surgery, and critical care at a large 24-hour small animal/exotic practice for over 12 years. While doing this, she also became the Chief Veterinarian for the Reid Park Zoo.  As a senior veterinarian, Dr. Roth is in charge of all nutritional, medical, and surgical care for the over 300 exotic animals that call this renowned  AZA facility home. She has developed a reputation in the field of zoo and exotic animal medicine and together, with her husband as a technician, travels to consult multiple zoos and aquariums both nationally and internationally. Her husband Aaron Roth, is also owner/manager of Civano Animal Hospital and Emergency Center. They have three beautiful daughters, a very helpful westie named Charlie, and two rescued Sphynx cats! Dr. Roth is both humbled and elated to be pursuing the childhood dream she shared with her sister Dr. Lindsay McCrady and opening a state-of-the-art multispecies veterinary practice in the community in which they both grew up, and they also got the best accountants for doctors to help them with the clinic.

Dr. Lindsay Juhl (formerly McCrady), DVM

Dr. Lindsay Juhl is a Tucson native and more specifically is from the Vail area.  She grew up in the Vail school district on 20 acres and developed a love for nature and all the creatures the desert had to offer.  She attended Old Vail when it was just K-8th grade and then Acacia when it opened.  She then attended Sabino High School and graduated in 2001.  She went on to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medicine with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Arizona in 2005. Dr. Juhl then attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at Colorado State University where she graduated Cum Laude in 2009. She then elected to pursue specialty training and completed a small animal medicine and surgery rotating internship in Tampa, Florida at North Bay Animal and Bird Hospital as well as Florida Veterinary Specialists, now Blue Pearl.  Dr. Juhl moved back to Tucson, AZ in 2010 to be closer to family and join the hospital where she had been a technician during her four years of undergraduate studies. It is also the hospital to which she owes her work ethic and love of veterinary medicine. She practiced advanced general medicine, surgery, and critical care at a large 24-hour small animal/exotic practice for over 10 years. While doing this, she became both Intern Director and Medical Director of a highly respected internship program and veterinary facility. She leads over 21 doctors and helped ensure only gold standard medicine was offered. She shares her dreams and passion with her fiancé and together they have 5 furry children.  Two French bulldogs named Carley Bernice Petunia and another named Delilah Rose.  They also have a kelpie named Stella and two beautiful cats, one of whom is a tripod.  Dr. Juhl is honored to be able to say that she has followed in her sister’s footsteps every step of her career.  She is now proud to be standing by Dr. Alexis Roth’s side pursuing their childhood dream of opening a state-of-the-art multispecies veterinary practice in the community in which they both grew up.

Dr. Jennifer Solis

Dr Jennifer Solis was born and raised in Tucson, AZ. She competed her undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona in Pre-Veterinary Science with a Minor in Chemistry. She then competed her veterinary degree at the University of Glasgow located in Scotland in 2016. She was able to travel and gain experience in a wide variety of animals while studying in the United Kingdom. She was able to work at a clinic in Malta working on companion animals and then spent a month in Morocco treating working equidae. After her completion of her degree she decided to return to her roots and took a job in town for the past five years as a general practitioner. She is now very excited to branch into emergency medicine on a wide variety of species! She has had an amazing support system from her family including her husband who joined her on most of her adventures in Scotland. They now have a son to join into their fur family which includes two heelers, two cats, a chinchilla and tortoise!

Dr. Carolina Alvarez

Dr. Carolina Alvarez was born in Ohio and raised between Ohio and Spain, where her family is originally from. She graduated from The Ohio State University in 2015. Dr. Alvarez then attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia where she graduated Suma Cum Laude in 2019. While in school she traveled as much as she could while pursuing her studies and has been on every continent except Antarctica! After graduating vet school, she stayed with her mentors at University of Georgia and completed a large animal rotating internship. The following year she moved to Tucson for yet another internship and completed advanced training in small animal medicine at a 24 hour emergency private practice and zoological medicine with Dr. Roth at Reid Park Zoo. She is most interested in large animal and zoological medicine and still goes to the zoo every week. Tucson has become home! She lives with her significant other, German Shepherd mix named Callie, and fosters Great Danes when she can. When she isn’t working she thoroughly enjoys the outdoors, drawing, and travel!

Dr. Tara Farrell

Dr. Farrell was born and raised in Tucson, AZ. She attended college at Saint Mary’s College of California where she played Division 1 Soccer all 4 years and obtained a degree in Biology in 2010. She went on to Colorado State University and obtained a Master’s in Veterinary and Biomedical Science in 2011. After her masters program, Dr. Farrell came back to Tucson to work as a technician. In 2013, she traveled to Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on the island of St. Kitt’s and Nevis, where she graduated in 2016 with High Honors. Dr. Farrell finished her clinical rotations at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After graduation, she moved back home to Tucson where she worked in general practice in town before joining Civano. Outside of work she enjoys traveling to places around the US and in Europe, along with hiking, wine tasting, and golfing, as well as being with family. Her family includes her 2 dogs – Arnie (Arnold Palmer) and Winnie, and a cat named Nala.

Dr. Julia Steinke

Julia Steinke, DVM, is a Tucson native with a lifelong interest in biology and a love of animals. She attended the University of Arizona for her undergraduate degree in Veterinary Science in 2011 and minors in Chemistry, Chinese and Japanese. She moved to Fort Collins Colorado for vet school. She took a break from medicine in the summer of 2012 and spent the summer teaching English in Wuhan China with the Tucson based group Teach for Friendship. She graduated second in her class from Colorado State University with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. She returned to Tucson to work as a small animal GP to be near her family and fulfill her WICHE scholarship. Currently she and her husband have three trouble making dogs and a variety of salt and freshwater fish. She enjoys painting and gardening on her days off from the clinic.

Dr. Gerardo R. Vela

Dr. Gerardo R. Vela, was born and raised in Laredo, Texas on the South Texas/Mexico border along the Rio Grande. Growing up working on ranches with dogs, cattle, and horses among other species, he developed a deep love and appreciation for animals and nature. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M University – Kingsville in 2015, he returned to Laredo to work on a cattle ranch. In the fall of 2016 he moved to Houston, Texas and began a career with the Texas Department of Agriculture, most of which was spent as the Livestock Export Facility Operator at George Bush Intercontinental/Houston Airport (IAH). While working there he partnered with USDA APHIS veterinarians to inspect and facilitate the international shipment of livestock out of Texas. In addition to working full time, he pursued online graduate coursework through a Masters of Science in Medical Microbiology and Biochemistry program by the University of Florida. In the summer of 2020, Dr. Vela moved to Tucson, Arizona following his acceptance into the inaugural class at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine.

While his passion for veterinary medicine began with mixed animal medicine, he has found through his education that he truly enjoys helping animals that need immediate assistance, leading him to pursue small and large animal emergency medicine. Upon graduation, Dr. Vela and his wife made the decision to remain in Tucson and build roots for the next chapter in their lives.

We are proud to announce that Dr. Gerry accepted a position to join the Civano Animal Hospital and Emergency Center family! Supporting him along his academic journey and career has been his incredible wife and their German/Australian Shepherd mix named Duchess. In their free time Dr. Vela, his wife, and Duchess can be found hiking on the various trails in town or researching their next travel getaway.

Dr. Ciara Aguilar-Beaucage

Dr. Ciara was raised in southwestern Tucson, Az. She is a double University of Arizona alumni, completing her undergraduate degree in veterinary science in 2018, and then her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2023. Bear down!

Dr. Ciara has been around horses her whole life. She participated in many junior rodeos and gymkhanas with some success growing up. To this day she still likes to travel around to local team roping jackpots and World Series team roping events. Before going to veterinary school, she worked as a veterinary technician in Tucson for a mobile equine practice. Dr Ciara is very excited to bring her skills, passion and knowledge to Civano Animal Hospital. She looks forward to providing excellent care to not just horses, but also the large and small animals in the southern Arizona community in which she grew up!

She currently has a mini zoo of her own and plans to continue adding to it, including 3 horses Charlie, Badger and Mamba, a cat and a Sulcata tortoise.
